Works that transcend beauty and strength in form.

Works that transcend beauty and strength in form.

Lucinda Jones brings to life her muses from polaroid to painting, inviting the viewer to find their own connection to the figures in front of them. Intrigued by photos of women in Paris Vogue, Lucinda developed a desire to create her own images. Her process starting with photography of her muses caught on a polaroid and then from here painted on raw linen using colour, composition, and mood.

Drawing on strength of feminine energy with a nod to fashion, we felt a strong connection to Lucinda’s work. Our team ventured to her northern beaches home in Sydney, where we captured Lucinda in her element, while also engaging in conversations of her childhood where her love for art began.

"My muses have been women who I have worked with or met randomly. I guess we choose each other in a way."

When did your artistic journey begin and where does your passion for art come from?

I have painted for as long as I can remember. Always in my bedroom as a little girl, all weekend. It was, and still is an escape for me.

I would say my passion comes from a desire to use my hands, and a need to express and create something tangible.

What is your process from concept to painting?

Imagery is often the start of the concept, or colour. When I was younger, I was so intrigued with images of women in Paris Vogue.

This developed into my desire to create my own images, in collaboration with my muses. The aim is to capture a moment or a feeling, which then goes onto inspired the composition, colour and mood of each work.

"My muses have been women who I have worked with or met randomly. I guess we choose each other in a way."

"Fashion demonstrates so much freedom for expression, and its endless possibilities are so exciting to me."

Where do you find your inspiration?

Honestly everywhere, it is never ending. Books, Magazines, Food, Photography, Interiors, Conversation, and the Coast…

How do you choose your muse/s?

I rely on a little bit of serendipity. My muses have been women who I have worked with or met randomly. I guess we choose each other in a way.

You mentioned colour being key in your work, what is the process of picking the right colour and have you have started a piece and realised you wanted to change it?

Colour is something you really can’t push. If it doesn’t feel right, I won’t start the work. I will just keep thinking it over or looking at other options until I get a really strong sense to go with it. So, I would say intuition plays a big part. Once I commit, there is no changing it, as I paint directly onto raw linen and paper.

There is a fashion influence we can see in your work, is there any intention to speak to fashion?

Fashion is my biggest source for inspiration. Coming from a background in fashion, I am always drawn to fabrics, particularly natural fibres. I think that is how I have ended up painting on a material such as linen. Fashion demonstrates so much freedom for expression, and its endless possibilities are so exciting to me.

What does original artistry mean to you?

Not comparing your expression to anyone else.

Where is your most favourite place in the world to get refreshed and inspired?

Open highway, driving towards a far-away beach, an eski and my family.

Where is your next destination?

A house on the beach, just outside Noosa.
