This Mother’s Day, we celebrate those who carry it all – motherhood, career and all the in between.
Meet Emily McIlvin, State of Escape HQ’s multi-tasking, resident ray of sunshine. Mother of Percy, age 3, and expecting a little girl in June, Emily balances the demands of home and fulltime work life with grace and composure – but she’s not afraid to tell us when she’s had cause to cry. We spent the day with Emily to chronicle the ins and outs of her journey and spoiler alert, it didn’t all go according to plan, but it works out just fine.

- What does a typical day look like for you right now?
- I am surrounded by early risers so as soon as the birds greet us, we are up. Percy, my son, loves making breakfast so we go through the options – usually banana pancakes – and race to make it so that l can eat too and then switch duties with my husband. I can then enjoy a shower in peace! Not today though- a hallway fall while running for some cars meant cuddles, an impromptu 6:30am art session & an early car race to start the day. Then it’s time for daycare drop-off and the office. Of course, most mornings just walking to the car requires a good amount of convincing P not to jump in puddles or engage in some other ‘activity’ that will require an outfit change! On the short drive to daycare, we look out for garbage & construction trucks - small joys to ease the impending drop off.
- When l arrive to the office, l typically start with coffee and a second breakfast, then I dive into emails. I wrap up at 4.30pm so that I can do the pick-up: my favourite hug of the day! On the way home, P and I sing our way through the drive to prevent any tired, hangry meltdowns. The evening goes too quickly. We negotiate TV time, cook dinner & sit down at the dinner table. At the moment we love a family boardgame, so this is a must every night before bath and books. It’s always double the agreed number of books (we have a strong negotiator on our hands) and then a ‘night night, love you so much’ at lights out. We are not far behind him, after a quick brainstorming session for baby names!
- How has juggling motherhood and full time work changed your perspective on life?
-
Juggling motherhood with full-time work has made me much more intentional about my values, priorities, my time, and what truly matters—my family. I’ve learned that I can’t do it all, but can try to embrace progress over perfection and be fully present wherever I am.
Children bring so much infectious joy, wonder and a sense of freedom, reminding me of the importance of slowing down, being kinder to myself and enjoying life.
I’ve also gained a deeper appreciation for all the caregivers who wear many hats, those who help care for our little ones so we can make it all work, and I have so much gratitude to those who continue to support me - even when I take far too long to reply to messages. It’s busy and exhausting, but it’s incredibly rewarding to be a mum whilst continuing to grow in my career.

- You've got a lot on your plate, are there moments you carve out just for yourself and if so, how do you like to use this time?
- It’s definitely a work in progress, and l am still learning how to navigate the guilt that can come with taking any time away. I am very grateful to my husband, who reminds me often to take some time for myself, so when l do, l love to take myself out for a coffee and a bakery treat - with my Kindle in tow.

- What item do you always have in your Escape tote?
Water & sunscreen are the daily essentials that go with me everywhere. Not a day goes by when I am not asked for water and likewise, when l am not reminding to reapply.

- What helps you reset on tough days?
We definitely have our share of tough mornings and challenging days. On rocky mornings, we head straight outside for a quick walk down to the beach for some fresh air (there is nothing like the calm of the coastline) and then head home to make breakfast together. I owe a lot to my mother in-law for her banana oat pancakes recipe – it is constantly saving me! I also find my reset in music, especially during the drive to pick-up when I have some solo time. P and I have a playlist of our favourite songs that we blast together on the last leg home. It’s a real spirit lifter.
- What’s one daily habit you swear by?
Eating at the table. It’s so tempting to eat on the couch or have meals at different times, but sitting down together helps us reenergise as a family. It’s our chance to chatter about our day and enjoy food (we love to cook!). It truly makes a difference in how we start and end the day, even if P jumps out of the chair after 5 minutes.

- Your family is growing, what pieces from our collection are coming along for the journey?
- Everyday pouches are a habitual organiser’s crush! I can’t wait to organise my newborn’s essentials for our upcoming adventures, and I love that l can have stash them inside my Escape Tote or simply grab one and go.
- What does escape mean to you?
- Escape for me is being with my loved ones. I am most content, energised & recharged when I am around others, soaking up the coastline of Sydney’s beautiful northern beaches. Seeing the world again for the first time through Percy’s eyes is also a constant escape.
