Travelling to Amsterdam

When the visuals capture the story of destination and place. Explore some of photographer, Peter van Alphen’s, favourite spots in Amsterdam and add these to your vacation bucket list.

Peter's visual diary, documented on a recent trip home, explores a city unlike any other. Steeped in artistic heritage and impressive architecture, Amsterdam will intrigue and delight.

All images were photographed by Peter in November 2022. Peter has been capturing moments for State of Escape since 2020.

Film museum Eye –

Film archive, museum, and cinema in one. Amazing building on the other side of the IJ river from Central Station. You can take the free ferry across. The 24/7 ferry service is free and leaves every few minutes, only take 3 minutes to cross.

Athenaeum Boekhandel –

One of the biggest bookstores in Amsterdam. But my favourite part is the Athenaeum Niewscentrum on the corner with the best international magazines you can find. And if you’re there on a Friday you must visit the Spui Book Market, with a great collection of second-hand books.

FoAm –

Another amazing photo museum with a great bookshop and magazines. Shows upcoming artists and well as known photographers.

Bar Bukowski –

Great reason to visit the Eastern part of Amsterdam. And while you’re there, cross the street to walk through Oosterpark and visit the National Monument Slavery Past.

Mendo –

Beautiful bookstore with a great collection of books about photography, travel, fashion architecture and graphic design. Especially good to visit if you’re looking for coffee table books.

Huis Marseille –

Museum for Photography, great exhibitions and amazing building. Situated in a 17th century canal house. Don’t forget to visit the garden house in the back.

Unrecorded –

Located in the 9 Streets (worth a visit alone), this clothing store has beautiful simple basics. Cotton is 100% organic, wool mulesing free and ethically manufactured (pictured above).
