Volume 2 of our artist series introduces sculptor Niki Lederer. A collaboration which inspired our first bio-based neoprene and recycled polyester capsule - Neochroma.

Reimagining brightly coloured plastic objects into artful sculpture, artist NIKI LEDERER, brings attention to global overconsumption and waste through her original artistry. Inspired by her captivating vision, State of Escape has collaborated with Niki to design a collection made from bio-based oyster shell blend rubber and recycled polyester, featuring a 2D interpretative print of her work.

NEOCHROMA - neo meaning ‘new’ and chroma defined in colour theory as ‘the degree of vividness of a colour’, consists of 3 styles: our classic Escape tote, Petite Escape, and Satellite Folio. Each creation features Niki Lederer’s artwork “Runner, 2017 (pictured below)".

“When creating my pieces, there is a combination of positive and negative space, a perfect balance between the two. Density is always important because it emphasises the overabundance of the plastic, allowing others to feel how overwhelming the chaos of the plastic is.”

Our Creative Director, Brigitte MacGowan visits Niki in her garage studio which was a world of vivid colour and interesting forms. Finding beauty in everyday neglected materials, we were fascinated by the way Niki uses colour, form, and density in found objects to create beautiful art.

It all started by walking her dog late at night, with no one around it opened the opportunity to pick out materials and unwanted rubbish that could be reused into artworks.

In her new neighbourhood, many people had huge recycling piles outside their apartment blocks - there Niki was fascinated by all the colours from the different recycled bottles and containers.

After collecting many different recyclable plastics, Niki found so much potential and beauty in these discarded pieces. Taking each piece, cleaning, and removing any branding she started to bring to life a new story for this object.

Niki carries a valuable message through her work – a universal narrative people can plug into for recognising that materials can be reimagined into something of beauty and conversation.

“In the scale of each sculpture the density is similar – quite dense and doesn’t usually get bigger than the scale of me. The scale needs to be seen and understood at a distance. There is a message in this that is showcasing how much waste there is in NYC, it is seen as a burden to be walking on the sidewalk when there is so much garbage – there needs to be a change in quality of life when looking at the waste on our streets”.
